Individual Therapy
People who seek individual therapy do so for a variety of reasons. Some common reasons include: relationship difficulties, work stress, managing family dynamics, life transitions, grief or loss, postpartum depression, excessive worry or anger, or to deal with events from the past that are still impacting their day-to-day lives. These issues often times manifest in anxiety and/or depression. Whatever your reasons may be, therapy provides be a safe, emotional space where you can explore ways to build the life that you want.
In individual therapy, I consider the first 4 sessions as an assessment, as we are both getting to know each other. I may be asking you questions about your background, current symptoms, and reasons for seeking treatment during these initial psychotherapy sessions. You are also encouraged to ask about me, my work, or about therapy in general.
Couple’s Therapy
In couple’s counseling, I work with each partner in the relationship as well as with the relationship itself. After the initial assessment, I meet with each partner once individually before continuing with couples therapy; this allows for an increased awareness of each partner’s position before getting started with couples work. I always seek out the best interest in couples, whether that means working to maintain the relationship, or to separate amicably. I work with couples at any stage of the relationship from preparing for marriage, to becoming parents, to preparing for retirement. Issues that are often addressed include: communication issues, sexual intimacy problems, life transitions, co-parenting concerns, financial conflict, separation and divorce, and restoring trust.
Family Therapy
In family therapy, I work with parents, siblings, spouses, grandparents and neighbors in improving communication patterns and minimizing conflict within the family. I do my best to align with every member of the family using a strength-based approach. Functional family relationships are an important part of psychological health and I prioritize seeing each individual’s role in the family system to improve its function. Issues that I often see in family therapy are: parenting issues, behavioral issues in children/adolescents/young adults, and family transitions and adjustments.
